Top tyre brands in price fixing raid

2008-04-11 00:00

Johannesburg — The Competition Commission has raided the offices of Dunlop Tyres International and Bridgestone South Africa to seek evidence of price fixing in the tyre industry.

The commission also searched the offices of the SA Tyre Manufacturers’ Conference, an association of the tyre industry.

Dunlop Tyres International is a subsidiary of the India-listed Appollo Tyres Group, which in the 2006/2007 financial year generated $240 million of net sales in Africa.

Bridgestone South Africa is a local tyre manufacturer.

“We can confirm that the raid took place. We will co-operate fully with the commission,” said Romano Daniels, a spokesman for Bridgestone.

Dunlop was not available to comment.

The commission has also initiated a probe against the SA Tyre Manufacturers’ Conference.

“The commission is of the view that this organisation may constitute the platform where coffee table discussions to determine price increases have taken place,” said the commission.

Nandi Mokoena, a senior analyst at the Competition Commission, said they received a complaint alleging that tyre manufacturers adjust their prices at around the same time and within the same parameters.
