Tornado: gift of the Givers puts up R2 mln

2011-10-05 00:00

FOLLOWING the devastating tornado in Duduza, Nigel, on the East Rand, the Pietermaritzburg-based Gift of the Givers is responding with a R2 million aid package.

Immediate response demands the provision of temporary shelter for 150 affected families, and the erection of United Nation standard tents and wendy houses began yesterday on the properties of the 150 home owners who suffered the greatest losses.

The Gift of the Givers said the building materials will be provided at a later stage to reconstruct permanent homes. The area was hit by a Force 2 tornado on Sunday, and wind speeds reportedly reached as 251 km/h.

The group’s staff on site will continue with the distribution of hot, nutritious meals, bottled water, new clothing, toys, hygiene packs and blankets.

South Africans wanting to participate in the relief effort can make contributions to Gift of the Givers’ account: Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, account no. 052137228, branch code 057525. Fax or e-mail the deposit slip with contact details for your contributions to be acknowledged.
