Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the accident happened when a car cut in front of a truck travelling in the fast lane. The driver braked and the truck was rear-ended by the car behind it.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to find the passenger of the car trapped in the crumpled wreck of the vehicle, which was pinned under the trailer.

The driver sustained serious injuries and the passenger is in a critical condition.
