Tow truck murder duo back in court

2014-11-14 00:00

THE state yesterday reinstated a murder charge against tow truck owner Prasheem Ramnarayan (29), arising from the death of a rival operator Viren Dewcharan in June this year.

Dewcharan was allegedly struck with a golf club near the Protea hotel in Hilton on the night of June 18. He subsequently died in hospital.

Ramnarayan yesterday rejoined his employee and co-accused Gitesh Ragunath (19) in the dock of the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in connection with charges of murder, assault and defeating the ends of justice.

The charges against Ramnarayan — the owner of Mr Towing — were withdrawn on July 30, but the decision was subsequently reviewed by the office of the KZN director of public prosecutions.

Based on the DPP’s decision, both again face charges of murder and of defeating the ends of justice for allegedly “telling witnesses to keep quiet about what they saw” and threatening to open assault charges to “cover” themselves.

The case was adjourned to December 9, when it is expected to be transferred to the regional court for trial.

Both accused are on bail.
