Toyi-toyiing brings health services to a standstill

2010-08-19 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal health sector was brought to a standstill yesterday as Cosatu and Nehawu members toyi-toyied at entrances of hospitals to disrupt services.

Northdale, Edendale and Grey’s hospitals were virtually empty yesterday and ambulance emergency numbers rang unanswered.

Ladysmith Provincial and Estcourt hospitals also felt the heat. The former said it has arranged with Laverna Private Hospital and 5 South African Infantry Battalion to treat critical patients.

An anonymous source said three men threatened staff at the Health Department’s Medical Chambers building in the city. Six floors of the building were evacuated.

Intimidation was also reported at Edendale Hospital.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan said no violence was reported.

Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo said the department has asked the South African Military Health Service to come to the rescue.

“Where there is a fairly good attendance and minimal disruptions, we are keeping such institutions running to ensure that some services continue …” he said.
