Tracking the killer

2008-08-22 00:00

THERE are four films opening in the city today — Reservation Road and Prom Night at CineCentre, The Rocker at Ster Kinekor, and Singh is King at Nu Metro while Mummy 3 and Journey to the

Centre of the Earth join the Nu Metro line-up.

Reservation Road is a taut drama from director Terry (Hotel Rwanda) George that explores the consequences of a fatal hit-and-run incident. Two families are unwittingly brought together when the son of college professor Ethan Learner (Joaquin Phoenix) and his wife Grace (Jennifer

Connelly) is killed by a car driven by lawyer Dwight Arno (Mark Ruffalo). Arno flees the scene but when Ethan sets out to track down the killer a twist of fate brings them together.

The Rocker sees a failed rock musician get his second chance

at the big time. Back in the eighties, Robert “Fish” Fishman (Rainn Wilson) was the drummer for

a rock band who got dropped from the line-up just before the band hit the big time. Twenty years later he’s still dreaming

of stardom when his nephew Matt (Josh Gad) forms a band with schoolfriends Amelia (Emma Stone) and Curtis (Teddy Geiger). He is ready to step up when

their drummer can’t make a

gig. Sounds pretty formulaic but the fact that this is directed by the man who gave us The Full Monty, Peter Cattaneo, promises more.

Prom Night looks to be a standard issue slasher movie with a psycho killer targeting a teenage girl and killing off her relatives and friends one by one. Stars Brittany Snow, Scott Porter, Jessica Stroup, Dana Davis and Collins Pennie.

The comedy Singh is King stars Akshay Kumar as a villager from the Punjab who through a series of misadventures ends up as kingpin of the Australian criminal underworld. Also stars Sonu Sood, Katrina Kaif, Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia and Om Puri.
