Tractor stolen for scrap

2014-03-31 00:00

BRAZEN employees of the Greytown Municipality have allegedly taken a municipal tractor and transported it to Pietermaritzburg where they sold it whole to a scrap metal dealer.

The two employees are believed to have appeared in court last week but the police could not confirm this, saying they could not find the record of the incident.

The Witness understands that the employees vandalised the old tractor with a tractor loader backhoe, then took it on a municipal truck to a scrap yard in Greytown about two weeks ago.

The owner of that scrap yard did not buy the tractor and the two employees then transported it to Pietermaritzburg where the tractor currently is. The owner of that scrap yard has allegedly not paid the two men.

Umvoti municipal manager Bongani Xulu was contacted for comment and confirmed the incident but refused to speak about it. He then accused the newspaper journalist of being sent by the accused to follow up on the reports to sabotage the case.

“We have to conduct our own internal investigation …♥ This matter is in court and speaking to the media about it will jeopardise the case …” he said.

Former mayor at the municipality, Petros Ngubane, said, “For them to take a municipal tractor, vandalise it and take it to the scrap yard to be compacted is unbelievable.”
