Traffic: College procession to cause delays

2013-03-01 00:00

MOTORISTS can expect disruptions to traffic in the Pietermaritzburg CBD this morning as the oldest boys’ school in KwaZulu-Natal celebrates its 150th anniversary with a parade.

The entire Maritzburg College cohort, joined by about 1 600 Old Collegians, will march from the city hall to the school at 10 am this morning.

According to College’s Carol de Matteis, Mayor Chris Ndlela will address the parade outside the city hall.

“The Caledonian Pipe Band will then lead the procession along Chief Albert Luthuli Road and right into Park Road. The procession continues through Alexandra Park, where about 500 preparatory school children will be waiting to cheer them on. From there they turn left into College Road and left again into the school,” she said.

The procession will then head to the Forder Oval, for the unveiling of a bronze statue at 11:15 am.

“Obviously with a procession this size, morning traffic around the city hall will be affected. Roads will be closed ahead of the procession and will be re-opened immediately it passes,” said De Matteis.

She said the event was historic for Pietermaritzburg, which celebrates its 175th anniversary this year.
