Traffic: Cop killed at crash scene

2008-11-09 00:00

A policeman was killed while attending to an accident on the N2 this weekend, one of five people killed in 47 accidents on KZN roads.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said the policeman was killed and a colleague seriously injured at the scene of a four-car pile-up on the N2 near Salt Rock on Saturday evening after a Ford Bantam bakkie rear-ended a petrol tanker. The bakkie driver was killed. The policemen were standing at the roadside when the driver of an Isuzu bakkie failed to slow down and ploughed into the accident scene. The bakkie’s passengers were seriously hurt.

In the Pietermaritzburg area, a full taxi collided with a bakkie on Edendale Road near Taylor’s Halt.

Two children, aged about six years and eight months were among the 18 injured.

A motorcyclist suffered a broken leg in a collision in Sweetwaters.

In Wartburg, four people were injured in the early hours of yesterday morning when the driver lost control of the car and drove straight into a ditch.
