Traffic cop: ‘assassins are after me’

2010-10-19 00:00

ASSASSINATION attempts and death threats following a quarrel with a local political official have allegedly forced a municipal traffic officer in Estcourt to stay away from work for the past three months.

uMtshezi municipal traffic officer and shop steward for the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu), Sizwe Majola (33), attributed two assassination attempts and several death threats to a conflict with the official, who he claimed made death threats against him.

“Things became worse when as a Samwu shop steward I challenged the appointment of a family member of the official to the municipality,” Majola said.

A recent attempt on his life allegedly took place in Weenen last Thursday when his car was sprayed with bullets while he was on his way to buy vegetables at a farm. The first attack took place in the eMabhanoyini area of Estcourt on August 13.

“We wrote to Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube to intervene as the situation is getting out of hand. I have received threats and at some stage, we had to run to the police station after being followed by a suspicious car.

Police Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge confirmed that two cases of attempted murder were opened by Majola.
