Traffic officer charged with assault on motorist

2010-03-17 00:00

CAMPERDOWN motorist Jude Ward will stand trial in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court on June 15 this year on charges of inconsiderate driving and failing to obey the instructions of a traffic official.

In turn the traffic officer whom she has accused of “bullying” her and assaulting her in the Camperdown police station on January 18 this year, will also be tried on an assault charge.

This is the decision taken by the office of the director of public prosecutions (DPP).

Ward has appeared in court on regular occasions since the incident in January and initially faced charges of reckless and negligent driving as well as failing to obey a traffic officer.

On the instructions of the DPP the reckless and negligent driving charge was changed to one of inconsiderate driving.

The traffic official has not yet appeared in court.

The senior public prosecutor at Camperdown confirmed that the DPP has decided to charge him and said summons will be issued ordering him to appear in court shortly.

No date for his court appearance had been decided yesterday.

Ward made another brief appearance before magistrate Thys Taljaard yesterday when arrangements for her trial date were finalised.

She is to be represented at trial by advocate Christo van Schalkwyk SC, the court was told.
