Traffic officers cough up R500 for parking in disabled bay

2012-01-07 00:00

TWO traffic officers from Empangeni had to pay a R500 fine after parking an official car in a disabled bay at the Liberty Midlands Mall.

Centre manager Cassy Fourie told Weekend Witness the car was clamped after it was found illegally parked outside the Woolworths entrance.

“We have had similar incidents in the past and we have taken the same action. The police [Traffic and SA Police Services] have their own designated parking bays, so there is no reason why they should be parked in the disabled parking bays,” said Fourie.

Although this was not the case in this instance, Fourie said that if there is an emergency situation at the mall, special dispensation is given for service vehicles to use the disabled parking.

Transport Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the officers were assigned to drop off documents at the Traffic Training College in Burger Street.

“This behaviour is regrettable … The matter has been referred to the commander of the Empangeni region to further investigate the matter and to advise on further actions to be taken against the officers,” said Ncalane.
