Training to take Zululand farmers to foreign markets

2012-10-08 00:00

A PROGRAMME in Richards Bay training subsistence farmers into commercially viable businesses is part of a greater vision that could see local produce being sent to foreign markets.

In partnership with the Office of the Premier’s flagship “Operation Sukuma Sakhe” project and the Indlovu Agricultural Development Agency, a number of small growers were given an accelerated course in turning their produce into cash.

The initiative is part of a wider ambition to run a viable fresh produce market in the uThungulu District, which will act as a conduit for small farmers to access new markets.

Thirty co-operatives from different local municipalities received training in how to work with each other, food security, vision realisation and leadership skills.

uThungulu Fresh Produce Market manager Noah Nyawo said the main aim of the programme is to “develop farmers so they will be able to supply to the markets”.

It is hoped that the programme would result in emerging farmers becoming commercial farmers in a few years, he added.
