Transformer sparks scare

2013-06-03 00:00

TWO transformers situated adjacent to each other at the AB Jackson sports field sent firefighters and the police into a panic yesterday when one of them exploded.

One transformer burnt to ashes, leaving the other emitting smoke from the bottom a long while after the first had burnt out.

An officer at the scene who did not give his name frantically went from house to house at the Maritzburg College buildings next to the grounds.

“We are trying to alert people in these buildings to this imminent danger. The standing transformer could also explode and nobody knows what the consequences will be,” said the officer. He said they were waiting for Msunduzi municipal electricians to come and monitor the situation.

Rowen Ratanjee, senior station commander at Rural Metro Fire Rescue services, said they would investigate the cause of the fire.
