Travellers stabbed in bizarre attack at airport

2014-01-06 00:00

BLOEMFONTEIN — A “very large man”, possibly of unsound mind, stabbed two travellers in a busy parking area at the Cape Town International Airport.

The men, Stamatios Tsangarakis (61) and his son Andreas (23), were stabbed on Thursday by a man from Nyanga.

Reports indicate that the attacker may be of unsound mind as he had repeatedly asked the police to shoot him.

Airport spokesperson Deborah Francis described the attack as an isolated incident and said the attacker had begged the police to shoot him.

“This was the first time that something like this had happened at the airport,” she said.

Stamatios is a director of a legal firm in Bloemfontein. His son is an candidate attorney in Cape Town. They were on their way to the family’s holiday home in Kleinmond.

Stamatios initially suspected a pickpocket was attacking Andreas when he saw “a very large man” hitting his son. He tried to drag the attacker off his son but was stabbed three times in his left arm.

Both victims were released from hospital on Friday.

They did not react to calls from sister paper Volksblad yesterday.
