THE head of KwaZulu-Natal Treasury, Smiso Magagula, was named as the best head of department for 2014 in the Premier’s service excellence awards.

The Provincial Treasury, led by Magagula, was also named as the best public service institution.

The two awards were despite the recent proclamation signed by President Jacob Zuma authorising the Special Investigating Unit to probe management of finances in the province.

Richmond Municipality’s S.E. Sithole was named as the best municipal manager.

The Uthungulu District Municipality was named as the best run municipality and Mseleni Hospital as the best Batho-Pele team of the year.

S.Z. Sibisi, in the Premier’s Office, was named as the best public servant while Sister Duduzile Ndlovu of the Port Shepstone Hospital was recognised as the best frontline service delivery employee.

Speaking at the ceremony, Premier Senzo Mchunu said professionalism and adherence to strong ethical standards by civil servants, government departments and municipalities restored confidence in the government.

“I want to pay tribute to the workers of this province who have worked tirelessly to create the stable and prosperous KwaZulu-Natal that we live in today.”

Mchunu said the hosting of the awards gave the opportunity to promote the legacy and values of Nelson Mandela.

“We recommit ourselves as servants of the people, inspired by the values of Madiba, to intensify our efforts to restore the dignity of our people.

“We are all reminded … that Tata Madiba believed that the state was the only instrument available to ensure a better life for our people,” he said.
