Treasury team to evaluate Msunduzi

2011-09-06 00:00

THE National Treasury is in Pietermaritzburg to evaluate the financial state of the Msunduzi Municipality and to provide assistance in resolving the municipality’s financial problems.

Administrator Sibusiso Sithole said, “Municipalities under administration need the support of the National Treasury. This is why we have invited them to come here and offer assistance to the council.”

He said the municipality will be working closely with the Treasury team to ensure the turnaround of the municipality.

The Treasury officials were impressed with Sithole’s honesty in laying bear the problems at the municipality, said insiders.

They said the officials find that most municipalities hide crucial information, which makes it difficult for the treasury to assist them.

This is not the case at Msunduzi.

For example, they said, Sithole was open about the lack of qualifications among senior managers at the municipality.

He told the treasury that one reasons why the municipality is struggling financially is that more people in management positions do not have the necessary qualifications.

Sithole pointed out that, ironically, qualified officials are languishing as ordinary employees.
