Treats for gadgetheads

2014-12-13 00:00

IT’S that time of the year again, when malls become too cluttered, leaving last minute shoppers with not much time to cram in purchases for their loved ones.

Not to forget the unavailability of those gadgets you’ve been waiting to get your hands on for Christmas. If you still have your eyes peeled for gadget gifts to get this festive season, let’s help make the choice a little easier.

PLEASE BUY ME THIS FOR Christmas

Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

As with smartphones, those in the market are spoilt for choice when it comes to purchasing a tablet. But who doesn’t want to use their tablet in the shower? With an IP 58 rating the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet is dust and water resistant – using this device while in the bathtub shouldn’t be a problem. To add to reasons to purchase it, the device can be paired up with a PlayStation 3 or 4 controller and be used to play games off it or as a secondary screen while playing games off the console.PHOTO: Sony

Samsung Galaxy Gear S

This device acts independently from a smartphone, the wearer can easily leave their smartphone in Pietermaritzburg while on a business trip to Joburg because the Gear S uses its own sim card. It can be taken on a run to track steps, and has its own UV sensor and heart-rate monitor. It has GPS capability and runs off the Tizen operating system. Along with a few tailored apps this smartwatch is a fully cable computer on the wrist — haven’t we come a long way since the calculator watch?! PHOTO: Samsung.com

HTC One M8

This year’s contenders for top smartphone of the year included the likes of the iPhone 6, Sony Xperia Z3 and the Samsung Galaxy S5, which proved 2014 to be one of the best years for high-end releases. New tech specs this year boasted fingerprint scanners, heart-rate monitors and UV sensors in smartphones. However, breaking away from the norm is the highly underrated HTC One M8. With a fast processor, sturdy body frame and great camera, the device will stand its ground against competitors and at a slightly lower price point.PHOTO: HTC.com

samsung galaxy gear fit

While it may not be a hardcore fitness freak like a device from FitBit or Garmin, the Samsung Galaxy Gear Fit smartband is still a champ. The device connects to a Samsung smartphone and doubles up as an accurate pedometer and heart-rate monitor. Don’t forget this little guy let’s you know when you’re receiving a call or text message. What’s more amazing is that the Fit doesn’t come at too much of a price — with smart technology like this in it, the Gear Fit isn’t as expensive as your Michael Kors watch, but more expensive than a regular fitness band.PHOTO: supplied

Sony PlayStation 4

When judged by sales figures, the war being waged between Sony and Microsoft has been decided. By popular choice, the PlayStation 4 beats the Xbox One as the must have console, once again this year. With games like Metal Gear V and Uncharted 4 on the cards, PS 4 may be the way, even if Xbox offer the same or even similar titles. The PS console will fill the void of entertainment hub for the whole family. PHOTO: supplied
