Trial delayed by accused’s ‘sick note’

2010-03-12 00:00

THE trial of two men charged with the murders of former Wartburger Hof Hotel proprietors Ingrid and Siegfried Schadle, on November 7, 2007, did not proceed yesterday due to the ill health of one of the accused.

It is believed the accused, Muntukayise Ronald Ngubane (35), is a diabetic.

It emerged from a “sick note” handed to the court yesterday that he has allegedly not been taking prescribed medication. Judge Kate Pillay warned the court will not tolerate delays caused by deliberate conduct. “Inform your client that if he doesn’t take his medication I will have him brought here on a stretcher if necessary,” the judge told legal aid lawyer Eric Zaca, who represents Ngubane.

Ngubane and his co-accused, Funokwakhe Ncwane (42), have pleaded not guilty to murder, attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted murder.

Ngubane, a former employee at Wartburger Hof Hotel, has admitted that he and other accomplices planned to rob the hotel, but alleges he specifically told his co-perpetrators not to shoot the Schadles.

The hearing is due to resume today.
