Trial in doctor’s murder delayed

2015-02-17 00:00

THE anticipated start of the trial of two men charged with murdering medical doctor Bhavish Sewram in 2013 has been delayed until today.

This after one accused failed to arrive from prison yesterday.

Advocate Di Franklin, who is representing Mfaniseni Nxumalo, told Judge Anton van Zyl she had not been able to find out why he did not come to court. However, there was a “rumour” that he was sick.

Nxumalo is due to stand trial alongside former policeman Brian Treasurer (who is on bail) for their alleged involvement in the shooting of Sewram outside his surgery on the night of May 13, 2013.

Last year the trial of the two men was separated from that of businessman Rajivee Soni, who will face similar charges next month.

The state alleges that Soni plotted Sewram’s murder because he suspected the doctor of having an affair with his wife.

Neither Treasurer nor Nxumalo have pleaded to the charge against them so far.

When the case was due to start late last year, Treasurer fell ill and was admitted to hospital with suspected heart problems.

He subsequently also changed lawyers.
