Trio admit to robbery and gang rape of teacher

THREE young men of Ulundi admitted in the Pietermaritzburg high court yesterday that they had accosted a teacher in her home, gang-raped and robbed her on August 31.

The accused, Mazwi Mdluli (21), Tholumusa Biyela (20) and Sabelo Mokoena (22), were convicted by Acting Judge Kobus Booyens of various charges. They pleaded guilty to charges including housebreaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape.

The men said that while going home from a tavern they discussed robbing a woman teacher “who resides alone nearby and has money”.

Mokoena and Biyela were armed with knives.

Biyela said, “The door to the house was closed. I kicked the door open. We all entered the house … we saw the complainant approaching us with a light in her hand.

“I grabbed her and asked her for money. She informed us that she does not have any money. I then stabbed her thrice on her body in an attempt to obtain money from her … We then decided to rape her.” Biyela said.

Biyela went into the bedroom with the woman and raped her while Mokoena and Mdluli waited outside. Biyela and Mokoena each raped her for a second time, they admitted.

They took a cellphone and a DVD player and left the house.

Legal aid attorney Kelvin Singh asked the court for time to obtain probation officers’ reports prior to sentencing. The case was adjourned to November 7.
