Trio held for Ekombe murders

2014-06-25 00:00

COULD three people arrested for being in possession of unlicensed guns and ammunition be linked to the murder of a family of four at Ekombe, Nkandla last week?

This is what police are working to verify after the three men were arrested when they were found with a 9 mm pistol and a .38 revolver.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the men were due to appear in the Nkandla Magistrate’s Court this week.

“Detectives will work around the clock to establish whether the suspects are linked to the killing of four family members in the area,” said Zwane.

Last week, the Mnyaka family were in their house at Shobalenyathi area when they were attacked. Sipho Myaka (62), Lindiwe Zuku Myaka (52), Philani Mbatha (3) and Majundu Linda (39) were shot and killed.

The family had reported to police that they feared for their lives, but no action was taken.

Zwane said the recovered guns would be sent for tests to establish if they were used during the shooting.

Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu said it had been established that illegal firearms were key drivers of crime in Ekombe and police were working to remove these from the community.
