Truck diver escapes looters

A TRUCK driver escaped unharmed as a group of men allegedly looted his truck in Hilton last week.

Sphamandla Mthethwa told The Witness that he parked the truck to take a nap along the N3 near Hilton off-ramp.

Mthethwa was travelling from Durban to Johannesburg when he pulled off the road in the early hours of Thursday morning.

“I woke up and disembarked for fresh air when I spotted a group of men on the hill watching the truck. I then noticed that the truck sail was cut open on the other side and there were already other men on the truck off-loading rice,” said Mthethwa.

He said the rest of the group on the hill suddenly descended and rushed towards him.

“I feared that they would beat me up and I ran for my life. I jumped on to the road flagging down other motorists for help. Some trucks and motorists stopped, and the group fled,” he said.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said a case of theft out of a motor vehicle is under investigation.

“Three pallets containing 10 kg [bags] of rice valued at R8 000 were stolen. The driver reported the incident at the Hilton police station. No arrests have been made,” said Naicker.

After reporting the incident, the driver was fined R200 for illegal stopping and parking on the freeway. He must pay the fine within 14 days or appear in court within a stipulated date.
