Truck kills 4 pedestrians

2008-01-15 00:00

Four pedestrians were killed yesterday morning in a road accident involving a tow truck on the N2 North between the Umhlanga and Sibaya offramps.

The tow truck seemed to have lost control and overturned slamming into the pedestrians who were using a pathway alongside the highway.

Netcare 911 responded to the accident. Three of the pedestrians died on scene whilst a fourth was in a critical condition. Paramedics worked to stabilise the patient, but he died en route to hospital.

According to the KZN RTI spokesman Zinhle Mngomezulu, the pedestrians were “two males and two females between the ages of 25 and 35”.

It is unknown at this stage if the tow truck was speeding. The driver of the tow truck sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

A charge of culpable homicide has been opened against him. The South African Police Services Collision Unit is investigating the accident.

Meanwhile, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Bheki Cele has warned pedestrians to stay away from the freeways.

He sent his condolences to the families of the deceased. The names of the victims had not yet been released late yesterday.
