True love rollercoaster

2010-10-06 00:00

DRAMA students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg will be bringing to life William Shakespeare’s delightful comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at the Hexagon Theatre from October 11 to October 15 at 7.30 pm.

Directed by Paul Datlen, and designed by Tamantha Hammerschlag and Sandra Styles, the play promises to take the audience on a roller-coaster ride through the world of dreams and desire, love and lust, and guarantees those watching a happy ending.

The 25-member cast has been drawn mainly from senior drama and performance studies students, and thanks to careful editing of the text by Diana Wilson and Datlen’s commitment to physical theatre, the play is delightfully humorous, excitingly energetic and, most importantly, accessible to South African audiences.

Speaking to The Witness, the director said Shakespeare’s words were as relevant today as they were when they were first penned.

“The play explores the nature of love, a fundamental and essential part of the human condition,” Datlen said. “And Shakespeare knew a thing or two about love, otherwise he would never have penned the words, ‘The course of true love never did run smooth’.”

Tickets for A Midsummer Night’s Dream are R40 (R25 concessions).
