Tuks crowned beer-brewing champions

2008-08-17 00:00

UKZN students were annihilated by Tuks (University of Pretoria) in the first inter-university beer- brewing competition at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Pietermaritzburg campus last week.

Tuks’ student brewers won in all categories to become the 2008 grand champions.

Ben Lamaletie, senior trade brewer with South Afircan Breweries (SAB) Prospecton, conceived the idea of universities having their own microbreweries.

Lamaletie said in a statement yesterday that seven years ago he had a dream that all the major universities would get involved in furthering the skills and education of students by installing micro-breweries as part of their scientific syllabus.

Lamaletie said the uniqueness of the initiative is that the students get educated and have fun at the same time — showing off their skills in a national brewing competition.

The Inter Varsity Beer Brewing Competition was organised by SAB Prospecton and UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg campus.

Teams from five other universities with microbreweries took part.

On Saturday, August 9, the teams and organisers met at UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg School of Chemistry, which hosted the event with SAB, for the beer tasting and judging.

Three beer types were submitted by each team — namely ale, lager and a “specialty” beer. Each team submitted one 750 ml beer bottle per category. The best beer label design was also judged.
