Tutu’s voice to feature in animated version of ‘Jock of the Bushveld’

2010-04-17 00:00

ARCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu will lend his distinctive voice to the character of Tata in the new 3D animated film Jock of the Bushveld.

Tata is described as a “spiritual leader” and the producers are thrilled that Tutu, archbishop emeritus of Cape Town, has agreed to be involved in the project.

At a media briefing earlier this week, the producer of the South African-made film, Duncan MacNeillie, said: “We really appreciate the time he is giving us.”

Tutu is expected to begin recording his role in June.

Other voices include Highveld 94.7 radio disc jockey Jeremy Mansfield as Pontoon Man, Bongani Nxumalo as Jim the Zulu warrior, and Damon Berry as the hero Jock.

Music for the film is being provided by Tim Rice, famous for his collaborations with Andrew Lloyd Webber.

This new animated version of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s classic South African novel is being produced in Johannesburg, using 21 locally trained animators.

Jock of the Bushveld tells the story of Fitzpatrick’s travels with his dog, Jock, during the 1880s, when he worked as a storeman, prospector’s assistant, journalist and ox-wagon transport rider in the Bushveld region of the then South African Republic.
