Twins get help from the city

2009-02-05 00:00

Help has poured in for the KwaMpumuza conjoined twins, Amazing and Holy, from Pietermaritzburg residents and businesses following The Witness article about them earlier this week.

The baby girls, who were born on November 12 last year at Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban, are joined at the chest. They have separate hearts, but share lungs and have one set of legs.

They have received milk formula, food, clothing, a cot and a pram. One of the donors is uMgungundlovu District Deputy Mayor Tu Zondi.

Zondi facilitated help for the twins and is helping the twins’ mother, Busi Ngubane, to obtain an ID card so she can access grants for her children.

She and the father of the twins, Sandile Gcabashe, are unemployed.

Zondi said she will approach the provincial government to try and get an RDP house for the family.

“The house they stay in is not in a good condition. The babies are fragile and cannot handle that. It is also far from public transport if there are any emergencies. They need a house that is easily accessible,” said Zondi.

The twins’ grandfather, Sam Mncwabe, said the family has received a commitment from a city resident to buy the twins food for three months.

“I would like to thank everyone who donated … the well-wishers and especially The Witness. I would like to encourage people to keep donating …” he added.
