Twitter outrage after teen’s murder

THE horrific murder of a 15-year-old KZN teen, whose body was found hanged in the bush, has shocked the nation with some calling for the death penalty on social networks.

After news of Nokukhanya Zama’s death on Sunday, #RipNokukhanya started trending, and late yesterday was a top trend with the Twittersphere expressing outrage over her gruesome murder.

The teen disappeared on January 11 on her way to catch a taxi to go to church. She never made it to church, and all attempts to get hold of her proved fruitless.

But on Sunday, the family’s worst fears were realised when Nokukhanya’s body was found hanging under a bridge, about two kilometres from the taxi rank where she was last seen.

Her mother, Nomfundo Zama, sent Twitter into a frenzy after posting Nokukhanya’s photo captioned: “We found our angel 1999 — 2015. #RipNokukhanya We will always love you. My pride my joy my light. Siyokubona lengaphesheya [we’ll see you in heaven]. We will surely miss her.”

Last week, the family had offered a reward for information about her whereabouts and a hashtag #HelpFindNokukhanya had been making the rounds on social networks.

The body of the KwaMakhutha High School Grade 11 pupil, who had been missing for a week, was found on Sunday afternoon in Folweni on the South Coast, provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said yesterday.

Zama yesterday battled to control her emotions. “I don’t know what to say. She was an amazing child, loving, respectful and always smiling.”

A police source at the scene said Nokukhanya’s lower body was naked.

Zwane said “a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of her death”.

He said her body was found by hunters’ dogs. Members of the community were alerted, and they contacted the police.

Former National Prosecuting Authority director Advocate Menzi Simelane tweeted: “Crimes against children must receive greater focus”.

@Sbublose said: “Let’s put the death penalty back on the Agenda for crimes like these. There is no rehabilitation for these type of animals.”
