Two arrested for staging robbery

A 34-YEAR-OLD security guard and a 27-year-old woman were arrested for faking a robbery and stealing brush cutters and a generator.

According to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, the pair were arrested after the woman alleged she had been robbed at work in Victoria Road.

She told police she was “confronted by a group of armed men who tied her up to her office chair with rope and stole cash and the machinery”, said Zwane, adding that the woman even alleged that she had been tied up for over two hours before her husband, who was picking her up after work, came to her rescue.

Zwane said she, with the help of the security guard who was guarding a business opposite the woman’s place of employment, staged the robbery to make off with the loot.

On Monday, acting on information, the police tracking team went to a house in Dambuza where they arrested the security guard for theft. Further investigations led police to the arrest of the female suspect along Greytown Road in Mountain Rise in Pietermaritzburg. She has been charged with theft and perjury, said Zwane.
