Two children die in head-on collision

2009-12-30 00:00

An unidentified man and two small children died in an accident on the M4 Ruth First Freeway beneath the Broadway Bridge in Durban yesterday afternoon.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare911 said an Audi A4 and an Opel Corsa collided head-on after the Corsa, with two adult occupants, allegedly veered across the median and ploughed into the Audi with six occupants.

A boy and a girl under the age of five died at the scene.

Five other people were critically injured and a seven-year-old boy sustained serious injuries when he was thrown from the Audi.

The engine block and front wheels of the Opel lay amongst debris which lined the roadway.

Wicks said it seems the Audi struck the Opel low enough in the front to push the vehicle upwards, crushing the roof of the Audi.

The driver of the Audi was killed on impact and his body was trapped in the twisted metal of the German sedan.

Netcare911 and EMRS paramedics stabilised the injured and took them to Netcare Umhlanga and Addington hospitals.

eThekwini Metro firefighters used the jaws of life to free the Audi driver’s body from the wreckage.

Metro Police officers closed the north-bound carriageway while the scene was cleared.
