Two dead babies found thrown away

2010-10-01 00:00

The decomposing body of a newborn baby was found on top of a mound of litter at the New England Road dump site yesterday.

The umbilical cord was still intact. The sex of the baby is unknown at this stage.

A police spokesperson said an employee who was working at the site found the body and contacted the police.

Police believe the baby, which appears to be fully formed, may have been born elsewhere and then dumped at the site recently. No arrests have been made and a case of concealment of birth has been opened. A post mortem will be held.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact D/Captain Pieter van Zanten of the Alexandra Road Detective Services on 033 845 7722 or on his cellular number at 079 500 0592.

In related news, police are searching for the parents of a baby who was found lying dead on a pathway near the Underberg cemetery on June 25.

Police said the seven-month-old baby boy was found wrapped in a blue blanket on a footpath along Ridge Road. No visible injuries could be found on the body.

Police appealed to anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the investigating officer D/Constable Cedrick Cele of the Himeville Detective Services at 033 702 1300 or 072 237 9108 or the Branch Commander D/Captain Musawenkosi Ntombela on 082 417 2753.
