Two gunmen die after store heist

2010-03-22 00:00

TWO armed robbers were killed and one was arrested yesterday after they entered the ABC Store in Boboyi, Port Shepstone, and demanded cigarettes, cash and airtime before fleeing the scene.

SAPS spokeswoman Zandra Wiid said the men, who were armed with a 9 mm pistol and a shotgun, held up the owner and his staff.

“A police constable who was tipped off by a community member about the robbery arrived in an unmarked vehicle and spotted the fleeing vehicle and followed it,” she said.

While the vehicle was speeding towards Paddock, the police constable noticed a marked police vehicle following him, and saw the occupants of the fleeing vehicle pointing a gun at him.

He fired at the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control, hit a signboard pole on the side of the road and crashed into a tree.

Wiid said one suspect was shot dead and another died in hospital after being wounded. The third suspect was arrested and two others fled into nearby sugar cane fields.

She said: “It is believed that the same suspects were responsible for a number of armed robberies that occurred in the south coast area.

“The case is under investigation”.
