Two in court for Wartburg farm attack

2013-08-27 00:00

TWO men made a brief appearance in the New Hanover Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with robbery at the home of a retired minister at Koperbult farm in Wartburg.

Khanyisani Gwamanda (18) was arrested on Thursday after he was chased by locals. He appeared with Sthembiso Hadebe.

It is alleged that Burkhard Richard Hecklau (70) was stabbed and robbed of his Opel Corsa bakkie on the farm on Thursday morning. Police said he had gone outside and on his return to the house was attacked by a knife-wielding man who stabbed him once in his arm and demanded the keys to his vehicle.

Hecklau handed over the keys and the man drove off in the bakkie. However, he had difficulty driving the bakkie and abandoned it and fled into a sugar cane field. Hecklau contacted the police.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said with the help of farmers, police blockaded the area and forced the suspect out of the field.

Hadebe was arrested over the weekend in possession of the keys to the bakkie and a stolen DVD. The two will appear in court again on September 2.
