Two jailed for beach cottage assault

2008-08-19 00:00

Two men were yesterday convicted of attempted murder, robbery and indecent assault of an American man and his South African girlfriend, while their co-accused was acquitted by the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

Fana Nhlumayo (21) and Sifiso Nhlumayo (20) were convicted of attempting to murder David Bovino and Jessica Webster at Leisure Bay on the south coast in 2006.

They were also convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances and the unlawful possession of a firearm.

Co-accused Sibonelo Mpisane (19) was acquitted as the court found no evidence linked him to the crime, although he had tried to sell some of the goods stolen from Webster’s parents’ home.

The men entered the parents’ home on the night of the incident. The couple were shot multiple times. Bovino has since made a full recovery, but Webster is paralysed.

Sifiso Nhlumayo was previously employed by the Websters as a gardener.

Justice Chris Nicholson said ballistics evidence positively linked Sifiso Nhlumayo to the Websters’ home as shell casings found at the scene matched those from a firearm recovered at his home.

He was also found with a number of stolen items taken from the Websters.
