CHANGES to the athletics fixture list sees two major races on Sunday morning.

The Orion club in Pietermaritzburg have their Save Supermarket half marathon starting from Protea Sports Ground in Khan Road, Raisethorpe.

This hillside race offers views down into the City of Choice and the first 500 finishers receive T-shirts with an additional 60 shirts reserved for the first walkers to complete the 21 km distance.

There are a number of giveaways, including 200 goodie bags. Entries will be taken this evening and from 2 pm tomorrow from the Save Supermarket in Truro Place, Northdale, and at the race venue from 5 am to the 7 am start time on Sunday.

There is also a five-kilometre fun run commencing at 7.45 am with

T-shirts for the first 50 finishers.

In eThekwini there is the annual Township to Township marathon, which this year runs from the Princess Magogo Stadium in kwaMashu (5.30 am) and follows a route along the outskirts of the city through Chesterville to finish in the King Zwelithini Stadium in uMlazi with a cut- off time of five hours for both Two Oceans and Comrades qualification.

The majority of the residents in these two major townships that were established in 1959, can trace their heritage back to a family in Umkhumbane, which is now known as Chesterville. A primary objective of the race is to continue these links through participation and spectator involvement in the race.

For the first time, this year there will also be a 21 km that will commence in Chesterville at 5.30 am and continue on the same route to finish at uMlazi. There is substantial prize money for both races, which are organised by the combined efforts of kwaMashu, Chesterville and uMlazi athletic clubs. Sabelo Bhodoza has more details at 073 212 7470.
