Two men badly hurt in assault in Mkondeni

2009-12-03 00:00

TWO unidentified men were severely injured in an attack along the old main road between Mkondeni and Ashburton yesterday.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said one of the victims was about to open a gate outside his property when three men alighted from a vehicle and started attacking him with metal pipes.

On hearing the man’s screams, a neighbour rushed to his rescue, but was also attacked.

The attack yesterday follows the shooting of two brothers earlier this week by unknown gunmen in the same area. Pieter and Rodney Bezuidenhout sustained gunshot wounds to the neck and stomach respectively after being shot while driving towards their place of work on Monday. Pieter drove to Medi-Clinic Hospital with a bleeding wound while his brother lay next to him.

Budhram said there was no indication the attack is linked to the recent shooting of the brothers. He said the attackers fled the scene and nothing was stolen.

Derrick Banks of ER24 said the men suffered severe head injuries. ER24 paramedics took them to Medi-Clinic.

When The Witness phoned to ask about the victims yesterday afternoon, a nurse, who would not identify herself, said the two men were no longer at the hospital. She did not say whether they were discharged or transferred to another facility.
