TWO women were killed and 26 injured in two accidents yesterday.

The first collision occurred on the R56 just outside Pietermaritzburg near France location yesterday morning.

Thirteen people, eight of which were schoolchildren aged between six and twelve, were involved in the accident.

According to ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks, a bakkie, a light motor vehicle and a Toyota Venture collided.

ER24 and the provincial ambulance service were called to the scene to assist.

“Three vehicles collided into one another and blocked the road.

“The majority of the people were injured, while others were found seated on the floor or walking around,” Banks said.

The driver of the light motor vehicle was in a critical condition and needed advanced life support intervention. He was intubated and placed on a ventilator at the scene before being taken to hospital in a critical condition.

“Three other patients suffered serious injuries and the remaining nine suffered minor to moderate injuries,” Banks added.

All patients were stabilised and taken to various hospitals in the Pietermaritzburg area by ER24 and the provincial ambulance service.

It is still unclear who was at fault.

The second accident happened on the N2 yesterday afternoon.

Two women died and 13 others were injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Mandini Toll Plaza.

Reports indicate that the taxi was travelling along the southbound carriageway.

It is believed that the driver lost control and the vehicle went tumbling down the highway.

When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the twisted remains of the vehicle down a steep embankment.

Commuters had been ejected and were spread over a large area.

Netcare 911 Chris Botha said paramedics found seven passengers who had escaped with minor injuries.

The injured passengers were taken to Stanger hospital for further care.
