Two rhino poachers shot dead

2014-02-07 00:00

TWO suspected rhino poachers were shot dead and two were arrested after a shoot-out with the police at the Phinda Game Reserve near Jozini in northern KZN on Wednesday evening.

KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said they received intelligence reports that rhino poachers would be active at the reserve that night.

Mntambo said a police special task force and organised crime unit pounced on the men, and a shoot-out ensued.

“I can confirm that two poachers were killed and two others were arrested. Poaching our animals will not be tolerated. We have already lost eight rhinos in the province this year alone, but with that, we can say with relief that eight poachers have been arrested in the same period,” said Mntambo yesterday.

The two suspects will appear in the Ubombo Magistrate’s Court soon.

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni congratulated the police teams on their success.

“It is very important that we deal with these crimes by conducting such multi-disciplinary operations, as police alone cannot win this battle. We will continue to hold such operations in future to dismantle syndicates that trade in our endangered species,” she said.
