Two robbers held after shoot-out

2013-12-31 00:00

TWO men aged in their mid 20s were arrested after a police chase and shoot-out in Masukwana Street in

Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane, members of the Pietermaritzburg Crime Prevention Unit conducting a routine patrol spotted a red Volkswagen Polo with ND registration plates, which was believed to have been stolen. The car was occupied by three men and was driving in the direction of the Manor area.

“The members immediately gave chase after the vehicle and subsequently signalled to the driver to stop the vehicle,” said Zwane.

It is believed that the driver of the Polo ignored warnings from police, tried to force the police car off the road and then sped off.

Zwane said police gave chase along Ohrtmann Road into Royston Road where the suspects lost control of the car and crashed into a wall.

The suspects got out of the car and one of them took out a handgun and fired multiple shots at the police. The police returned fire, but the suspects fled on foot. Police chased the men and arrested two of them. The third suspect escaped.

It is alleged that the car was stolen from Sinathing near Edendale on December 27.

The suspects will appear in court shortly on charges of attempted murder and theft of motor vehicle.
