Tyrone King brings Motown era to Catalina

2008-01-10 00:00

THE Catalina Theatre hosts Motown for Ever! — the story of Tyrone King and his take on the Motown era and its impact on a group of guys from Wentworth, Durban, running from January 15 until February 17.

Writer/director/actor Hamish Kyd has assembled a cast of vibrant and talented performers including Grant Jacobs, Anthony Joseph, Rory Booth, Portia Zungu, Cindi Ngidi and Praline Ross.

Kyd plays the narrator Tyrone King who narrates the story from his prison cell, where he is serving time for allegedly murdering his wife.

The Motown hits are interspersed with a poignant personal story. Kyd created the original show with the late Mervyn Goodman for the Playhouse Cellar in the heyday of that supper theatre venue. His idea has been updated and revisited and, using similar Motown hits, now involves a new storyline and exciting new cast.

Artists who found a home on the Motown label included The Miracles, The Supremes, The Temptations, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, The Jackson Five, The Four Tops, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder and, more recently, Boys II Men. The label dominated an entire generation of music and its effect was felt globally.

In the demarcated coloured areas of greater Durban, the impact of Motown was keenly felt and it shaped and inspired a way of thinking, dressing, dancing and music making.

For more information or to book, contact the Catalina Theatre on 031 305 6889. Shows are at 8 pm Tuesday to Saturday and at 6 pm on Sundays.

Every Tuesday and Sunday, tickets are two for the price of one — subject to availability.

Not content with creating Motown For Ever!, Kyd has also written his debut novel, Charlie, a poignant, colourful and uncompromising look at the tenacity and will to survive despite all odds.

Charlene D’Olivera (or “Charlie”) is an intelligent, outspoken young woman growing up in Newlands East in the eighties and the novel tells her story — surviving a nightmare journey into the underbelly of gang warfare, drug lords, blackmail and prostitution. The novel will be launched prior to the show on Thursday, January 17, before the show.
