U15 ambassadors to Norway

2011-05-09 00:00

TWENTY talented young footballers jetted off to Norway yesterday to represent South Africa in a schools tournament and learn about Norwegian culture.

The boys, all aged 14, were selected from schools around Pietermaritzburg by the Izichwe Youth Football Academy, which aims to develop young boys into men.

Before their departure Msunduzi Mayor Mike Tarr gave them a letter to pass on to the mayors of the towns they will visit in Norway. The trip was sponsored by insurance firm Metropolitan.

The founder of the academy, Thabo Dladla, told The Witness the boys will spend two weeks playing football, attending training sessions and visiting a variety of places to learn more about the country.

“Nowadays children grow up in a very contaminated environment and as adults we have to ensure that they have a brighter future by developing boys into men and top footballers into top human beings.

“We want to develop them so that when they are at a professional level it is not short-lived because they were not taught properly.”

Tarr said he hopes the boys will be good ambassadors of the country and create a link between the municipality and the academy when they come back.

On behalf of parents Ingrid Peters said: “This is like running a Comrades from one city to another.

“We want to see them doing their best as they represent the country and need to hold the flag very high.”

An excited Sandile Dladla said that he hopes to come back having gained experience in playing football rather than simply winning.
