U21 rugby: WP and Bulls are top teams

2013-10-22 00:00

WESTERN Province and the Blue Bulls reaffirmed their status as the top teams during the U21 Provincial Championships held at the weekend, by booking their places in the final in Cape Town on Saturday.

WP pipped the determined Golden Lions 44-41 in an epic semi-final at Newlands on Saturday, while the Bulls produced a fine performance to beat the Sharks 36-13 at Loftus Versfeld.

In Pretoria, four penalty goals by Bulls flyhalf Handré Pollard and a try by fullback Jacques Rossouw in the 24th minute pushed the hosts onto the front foot in their U21 semi-final against the Sharks.

Sharks flyhalf Duncan Campbell slotted two penalty goals to put his team on the scoreboard. But a late first-half try by replacement loose forward Dylan Nel reduced the gap between the teams to only four points (17-13 to the hosts) and set the scene for an exciting second half.

The home team, however, dominated proceedings after the break and Springbok centre Jan Serfontein scored the team’s second try.

Blue Bulls 36 (17) — Tries: Jacques Rossouw, Jan Serfontein, Wiaan Liebenberg. Penalties: Handré Pollard (7).

Sharks 13 (13) — Try: Dylan Nel. Conversion: Duncan Campbell. Penalties: Campbell (2).

** The Blue Bulls and Golden Lions will meet in the U19 final at Newlands on Saturday. The Blue Bulls defeated the Leopards 37-21 at Loftus Versfeld, while the Golden Lions edged the Sharks 27-25 at Ellis Park to book their final berth.

The Sharks’ ill-discipline cost them dearly, as three late penalties by Golden Lions flyhalf Brandan Hewit earned the Johannesburg side the victory.

Golden Lions 27 (18) — Tries: Jano Venter, Malcolm Marx. Conversion: Brandan Hewit. Penalties: Hewit (5).

Sharks 25 (17) — Tries: Bartholomeus le Roux, Christopher de Beer, Sandile Kubeka. Conversions: Jean-Luc du Preez (2). Penalties: Du Preez (2).
