UKZN Impi aim to win bonus points off Harlequins

2013-04-12 00:00

UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal Impi head coach Shawn van Rensburg is expecting nothing less than a big performance when his team take on Harlequins at 8.30 pm tonight at Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road.

“We were very disappointed with the 32-24 win against Maritzburg Collegians last weekend,” Van Rensburg told The Witness yesterday.

“We were rusty, the guys were just back from holiday and whenever we play Collegians it’s a massive derby, the players got frustrated. We are a far better outfit.”

The Impi’s first-choice locks, Dumani Dludla and Corné Nieuwenhuizen, are out and will be replaced by Chris Ndlovu and Wayne le Roux, while captain and number eight Andre Greyvenstein starts on the bench with Theo Kruger coming into the backrow. There might be some positional changes in the backline but the halfback combination stays the same.

“We need to put in a big performance, settle into our game structure and we will win,” Van Rensburg added.

Meanwhile in Durban Saturday, PMB Collegians have a tough nut to crack when they take on Varsity College at 3.30 pm at Riverside Sports Club in Durban North.

Varsity College enjoyed an emphatic 52-20 win over Harlequins last week and are a club on the rise. However, Collegians coach Rinier Bosman was impressed with his side in certain areas against the Impi.

“The forwards, especially, played well, our pick-and-drive was really good, our defence was impressive in stages, the Impi scored two soft tries, and it was our first match while the Impi had already played eight in the Varsity Shield, so it wasn’t a bad result,” said Bosman.

“Having had very little game time our guys are not battle-hardened, so there were quite a few bumps and bruises at practice on Tuesday, but we ironed out some problems in the forwards, talked about our defence and we are up for it against Varsity College. It’s a targeted game for us and we want to take the points, if not a win then bonus points.”

Collegians are missing inspirational 2012 captain and go-to man, inside centre Rikus Janse van Rensburg, who had a third knee operation during the off-season and was advised to retire. Abrasive lock forward Jean “Vossie” Vosloo is the new captain.

“Vossie has been in the club for a while now; he knows what’s needed as a leader and we have confidence that he can do the job,” Bosman said.
