UKZN Impi go down fighting to UWC

2013-02-12 00:00

A PRODUCTIVE first half did the trick for University of Western Cape in their Varsity Shield match against University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi in Bellville last night. The home side came away with a 38-15 victory after leading 20-2 at half time.

In the second half, the Impi fought their way back into the game and got within five points, at 20-15.

But the UKZN lads were always playing catch-up and UWC managed to recover sufficiently to stretch their lead with another 18 points for the 38-15 score at the final whistle. The Western Cape boys scored six tries on the night to UKZN’s two touchdowns.

Four unconverted first-half tries by wing Donavan Williams, a brace from flyhalf Freddie Muller and one more by No. 8 Heinrich Marcus put UWC in a commanding position, with UKZN getting on the board with Jaco Potgieter’s drop-goal.

Impi number eight and captain Andre Greyvenstein and loose forward Theo Kruger got over the UWC tryline for the KwaZulu-Natal men to come within a try of parity in the second half, but the points margin could not be overhauled, and the Bellville boys got two more tries before the end.

The Impi have a bye before they return on February 25 against University of Fort Hare in Alice.

The Impi lie third on the log behind frontrunners Central University of Technology and second-placed UWC. UFH are fourth and Tshwane University of Technology in fifth and last place.

In last night’s other result, CUT beat Fort Hare 44-29.
