UKZN Impi hope to stick to winning ways against TUT Vikings tonight

2014-02-24 00:00

AFTER frustrating one-point and five-point defeats to defending champs Central University of Technology (CUT) in Bloemfontein and University of Fort Hare in Durban, the UKZN Impi got full points out of their 33-24 Varsity Shield defeat of University of Western Cape in Bellville last time out, and now it’s time to consolidate on that win when they take on Tshwane University of Technology Vikings (TUT) at 7 pm tonight in the Peter Booysen Sports Park rugby stadium on the Pietermaritzburg campus.

All roads will lead to Golf Road in Scottsville for Impi fans as well as the general midlands rugby public and it promises to be a titanic battle against a hurting TUT after their 39-18 defeat by CUT at home in Pretoria last Monday, their first defeat of the Shield season.

The magnitude of third-placed Impi’s four-try defeat of UWC can be measured in the fact that it was their first-ever away victory against former Springbok head coach Peter de Villiers’s side.

Victory today will see head coach John Mitchell’s side secure a handy second spot behind CUT on the log at the halfway stage. In contrast, a TUT win will ensure they cement second spot going into the second half of the competition.

Mitchell’s satisfaction with the win can be measured by his naming an unchanged team for the TUT match.

There will be little rest for the Impi as after the TUT game they travel to Alice in the Eastern Cape and a muscle-up with Fort Hare on Thursday.
