UKZN Impi lose key player for key match

2013-01-26 00:00

WITH Bismarck du Plessis and Craig Burden still nursing injuries, the Sharks have withdrawn University of KZN hooker Franco Marais from Varsity Shield duty.

And with new prop Justin Haefele also on the injured list, the UKZN Impi have had to rejig their forward pack for Monday’s FNB Varsity Shield opening match against University of Fort Hare, which kicks off at the Peter Booysen Sports Park off Golf Road in Scottsville at 4.30 pm.

The UKZN Impi head coach Shawn van Rensburg and his staff have nonetheless announced a competitive team, with an exciting backline which includes the talented halfback combination of Zander Engelbrecht and Carl Meyer playing alongside Jeandre Small, a former Pukke player, and Sharks sevens star Gareth Meikle.

The match, which will be live on SuperSport, officially kicks off the 2013 SA Rugby Union (Saru) season.

The match will be preceded by a talk by inspirational rape survivor Jes Foord.

The UKZN Impi have been involved in fundraisers for the Jes Foord Foundation and recently undertook the refurbishment of the Jes Foord Foundation Community Centre as part of their campaign.

Further good news is that one of SA’s outstanding sopranos, Haylea Hounsom, has agreed to sing the national anthem before the match.

Likely UKZN Impi line-up: 1. Leon Mulder 2. Nico Du Plooy 3. Sizwe Khubeka 4. Corne Neiwenhuizen 5. Dumani Dludla 6. Zwela Zondi 7. Sanele Malwane 8. Andre Greyvenstein (capt) 9.
