UKZN: Prof wins award

2008-06-22 00:00

A University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) professor has received a medal of honour from the SA Academy for Science and Arts for her outstanding contribution in the field of science.

Professor Delia North, head of the School of Statistics and Actuarial Science, received the award at the University of Stellenbosch yesterday.

UKZN’s PRO vice chancellor of Corporate Relations, Professor Dasarath Chetty, said North works tirelessly for the development and application of statistics in SA and the award is apt recognition.

North has over 25 years of experience in teaching and designing of statistics curricula and has become a leading figure in statistics education. “It is an honour and very motivating to be recognised by the Academy, but it took a few minutes to sink in. I am incredibly grateful to UKZN and the many professional institutions and affiliations that have created the academic opportunities that have enabled me to play a significant role in the development of statistical literacy in South Africa.”

North was recently elected vice president of the International Association for Statistics Education.
