2008-10-08 00:00

THE Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year from the Pietermaritzburg campus will be announced at the Johnson & Johnson UKZN Sports Banquet in the capital tonight.

The Professor ND Clarence Trophy for Sportswoman of the Year sees Robyn Kime and Kara Stella in the running.

Stella is a member of the national basketball youth squad and the SA U19 hockey team, and has also represented KZN Midlands’ U21 and senior hockey teams this year.

Kime has achieved a number of canoeing milestones this year, including second place in the Dusi Marathon; first K2 and second K1 at the SA Marathon Championships; first in the SA K1 river championships at the Highlander challenge and first in the Jeep Msinsi Multisport series.

The Nux Trophy for Sportsman of the Year has Tommy Hammond and Kobus du Rand as the candidates.

Du Rand has become a key player in the PMB Varsity 1st XV; captained the UKZN team at the University Sport SA Rugby Week; and was one of two midlands men called up to the KZN Rugby Union’s high performance squad.

Hammond, currently playing club hockey in Belgium, was a key member of the SA men’s hockey team at the Olympic Games in Beijing two months ago.
