UKZN student to perform at Hong Kong’s Disney World

UNIVERSITY of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Bachelor of Arts student Bonisile Ndlovu has landed the role of Rafiki in The Lion King, which will be performed at Disney World in Hong Kong.

The excited 36-year-old is thrilled to be leaving South Africa to star in the celebrated musical, adding that she never dreamt an opportunity like this could happen to her.

Coming from a musical family and singing from the age of 11, Ndlovu’s first experience came with the gospel group, the Spiritual Healers, who would rehearse in a house in her neighbourhood.

Sixteen years later she heard about the auditions for The Lion King.

“They were in Durban to hold auditions for singers and actors to star in the production … I had not watched The Lion King or been involved in a production of this calibre, nor was my English anything to boast about, but something in me just wanted to audition to see how far I could make it,” she told The Witness.

“My family and friends are still in a state of total shock. I have gotten many disappointments over the years but today a new chapter has opened in the story of my life.”

Ndlovu hopes to receive a warm response from those watching and is confident that the production will continue to be a firm favourite at Disney World.

“I will be leaving very soon, this is an exciting opportunity and I want to spend as much time in Hong Kong and many parts of the world, growing and honing my skills as a musician,” she added.
